What is A Root Canal?

Woman at the dentist's chair during a dental inspectionRoot canal therapy is a straightforward, endodontic procedure designed to remove infection and save a tooth as much as possible when it is severely decayed or infected. During this procedure, Dr. Gill removes the nerves, blood vessels, and tissues, also known as the pulp, inside the root canal chamber. We clean and disinfect the canal thoroughly and fill it with an antibacterial material that is entirely safe for the body.

After the material is dry, we shape it to create a smooth surface for the placement of your filling or crown. The type of restoration we use to complete your procedure depends on the severity of your needs.

Why Is Root Canal Treatment Important?

3d render of tooth anatomyWhen the pulp of a tooth is damaged or infected, it begins to break down, and bacteria can quickly multiply within the pulp chamber. Decayed enamel material and oral bacteria left untreated can cause infection or a tooth abscess. In addition to an abscess, pulp infection can lead to swelling that could spread to the tooth roots, jawbone, face, neck, or head.

Root canal therapy is essential for preventing decay and disease from inside the tooth from spreading and jeopardizing your dental and oral health. For more complex cases and treating molars with root canal therapy, Dr. Gill can refer you to a trusted local endodontist to make sure you receive the best care possible.

How Do I Know if I Need Root Canal Therapy?

Tooth discomfort isn’t always an indicator that you need a root canal. However, the following symptoms may require a root canal to correct:

  • Debilitating tooth pain; when eating becomes difficult due to pressure put on the area
  • Severe sensitivity to changes in temperature that lingers after the hot or cold stimuli are removed
  • A small, pimple-like bump appearing on the gums near the tooth
  • Darkening of tooth enamel
  • Swollen and tender gums near the tooth in pain

Isn’t Root Canal Therapy Painful?

Modern root canal procedures are similar to receiving a filling. While root canal treatment may have a bad reputation, the truth is that it is designed to remove infection and relieve discomfort, not add it. It is the decay or infection that makes the treatment necessary in the first place.

What Can I Expect During the Root Canal Treatment Process?

close up of dental x-rayWe begin care with a detailed exam and a series of x-rays to determine the source of your issue and accurately diagnose your needs. Once we gain a complete understanding of your situation, Dr. Gill and our team take time to discuss your treatment options, helping you make confident and informed decisions about your oral health. We also perform pulpotomies, root canal treatment for children.

We can tailor your root canal procedure to fit your exact needs and comfort level. After the infection is removed from your tooth, we place either a natural-colored filling or porcelain crown to seal the tooth, protecting it from further damage or reinfection.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

You may experience some tenderness or mild discomfort following the first few days of your root canal. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen to help alleviate pain and for anti-inflammatory purposes. Be sure to take medications according to package instructions. We also recommend chewing on the other side of your mouth until your tooth has completely healed.

How Can I Protect My Teeth from Future Infection?

Below are seven tips we recommend to protect your smile from future damage:

  1. Keep your teeth decay-free by brushing them thoroughly for up to two minutes day and night
  2. Floss in between each tooth once a day and after every meal if possible
  3. Eat a healthy diet
  4. Avoid or limit your consumption of surgery drinks, foods, and starchy, refined carbohydrates
  5. Drink plenty of water and chew sugar-free gum
  6. Visit us every six months for regular cleanings and exams
  7. If you engage in rigorous sports or exercises, wear a mouthguard to help reduce chances of injury
