Why is Straightening My Smile Important?

A straighter smile can help provide you with more than improved aesthetics. Crooked teeth are often harder to clean due to overlapping teeth or crowded spaces that make daily flossing difficult. Over time, this can lead to issues such as decay and gum disease. An uneven bite can not only cause discomfort and wear down teeth but can also make chewing food difficult, resulting in improper digestion and malnutrition.

What is Invisalign®?

hand holding invisalign clear braces inside its protective caseInvisalign is a series of aligner trays that are made of clear plastic, making them appear virtually invisible. Each tray is designed to fit your unique smile. Your clear braces are replaced about every two weeks as your teeth become straighter. This helps keep your process on track as you graduate through your Invisalign treatment.

What Issues Can Invisalign Correct?

Few individuals are born with naturally straight teeth. Five common issues Invisalign can help address include:

  1. Crooked teeth
  2. Gaps between teeth
  3. Crowded teeth
  4. Minor Overbites
  5. Minor Underbites

How is Invisalign Different from Metal Braces?

The brackets are cemented onto the surfaces of your teeth for a certain period of time as the archwire is woven through. Rubber bands are applied to the brackets that apply continuous tension to move teeth into position. Invisalign aligners, however, are designed to use the pressure only in specific areas of your smile, gently shifting your teeth into ideal position.

While traditional metal braces are a reliable way to correct moderate to more complex orthodontic issues, Invisalign offers a great solution for those who wish to straighten their smile discreetly.

What is the Invisalign Process?

Dr. Gill begins the Invisalign process with a detailed consultation. During this time, she encourages you to talk openly about your needs, concerns, and goals for treatment.

Our team also takes a series of x-rays and impressions of your smile to create your custom trays. Our dentist examines your teeth and gums thoroughly, checking for any signs of decay, damage, or gum disease. If any restorative issues are found in your smile, we must treat these first before you can undergo Invisalign treatment.

We use 3D digital model technology to show you how your smile looks before and after treatment. We also use this imaging to design your custom Invisalign trays. Our office sends your model to an Invisalign lab, which crafts a series of clear aligners just for you.

We will then invite you back to our Fresno office to fit and adjust your first set of trays, beginning your treatment. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before progressing to the next set.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Last?

The length of your Invisalign treatment depends on your unique needs. However, in most cases, treatment time can range from six to eighteen months.

Who Can Get Invisalign?

Invisalign clear trays are removable. This means they can be taken out to eat and brush your teeth. Trays must be worn for up to 22 hours daily. Because of this, Dr. Gill recommends Invisalign for responsible teens and adults in good oral health who are more likely to follow treatment guidelines.
